The question that this article will be tackling is why are most websites in existence all clamouring to get the best in search engine optimization? The key reason is obviously, to attract as much web traffic as possible to try and generate more online business, and therefore getting into the top few results positions of a search term is the key aim for every business that has a presence online.
In order to get their pages moved up in the rankings for their chosen keywords, a few sites stuff their pages with these keywords in the hope that the search engines will pick up on it and rank them higher. This is however, not considered to be ethical practice and if it is picked up on by the search engines, they will penalise the site by removing it completely from the search results.
When web designers or search engine optimizers use techniques that are rightful, moral and approved by the search engines, this is known as using "white hat" techniques, whereas the other, not so moral and approved are known as "black hat" techniques. When white hat techniques are used and used well, getting to the top is simply a matter of time. Good techniques will prove beneficial and potentially very profitable for your site in the long term, whereas black hat techniques can seem to work on the short term, they can be disastrous for the long term.
SEO is constantly changing. The major and minor search engines are forever making changes to their algorithm i.e. the way they decide upon the quality of a site, and so it is very important for all webmasters to understand that SEO is not simply a one-off solution, it is an on-going process.
Website owners and SEO operatives will have to be aware of what techniques the search engines are using to rank sites, and incorporate what they want to see into their own sites in order to be picked up and ranked by the search engines.
