"Ladies coats" is an extremely competitive example of a short-tail keyword. Trying to get on to the first page of Google's search results for this keyword is exceptionally demanding. However, a long-tail keyword, such as "womens warm winter coats" will attract less competition and will be a lot easier to improve your ranking.

Due to the fact that competition is less intense, it is rather easy to get your site to rank high on page one when searchers use your long-tail keyword. However, the downside is that fewer users will be inputing these terms, which can have an impact on the number of visitors to your website.

Smaller numbers of visitors are balanced by the fact that online retailers often find that they achieve higher rates of conversion when users visit the site following an online search using long-tail keywords. This is due to the fact that the visitor has specific needs.

It is worth analyzing keyword phrase combinations to find out which work best for your website. You may find that it is more valuable to attract 200 visitors using long-tail keywords if 10% of the visits lead to conversion. This is a much better result than generating 1,000 new visitors with a short-tail keyword with a conversion rate of 1%.

On-page optimization of long-tail keywords has been found to increase rankings by six places in the search engine results in an internet study conducted in Dec 2011. The study report that they were 2.5 times better at converting visitors into customers than short-tail. This demonstrates that long-tail keywords have a huge amount of potential that has not yet been fully exploited by most.

With search engine optimization, the key to securing high search engine ranking remains the creation of quality content. This will help you drive a high volume of visitors.
